Caribbean Airlines Crash: Jet Cracks in Half During Landing

Caribbean Airlines flight 523 traveling from New York split in two as it crash-landed in Guyana on Saturday.

The Boeing 737 overshot the rainy runway and slid into a chain-link fence, which caused the plane to break in half just short of a deep ravine.
A few dozen people were injured, but miraculously all 163 people on board survived.
The Caribbean Airlines flight flying from New York landed at Cheddi Jagan International Airport early Saturday morning and according to passenger Geeta Ramsingh, the cheers of fellow riders quickly “turned to screams.”
Ramsingh reported to media sources: "The plane sped up as if attempting to take off again. It is then that I smelled gas in the cabin and people started to shout and holler.”
According to Ramsingh, she suffered some bruising as she jumped onto the airplane’s wing and then the road.

STEWARTSTOWN, N.H. - Less than 2 miles from the Canadian border, this tiny community is typical of a small town in almost every clichéd way. Diner waitresses ask if customers want “the usual.’’ Residents leave front doors unlocked and car keys in the ignition. At gas stations, drivers fill up their tanks and pay inside later.
But last week, life in the village of West Stewartstown has been far from typical.
More than 100 law enforcement officials from New Hampshire and Vermont, the FBI, the US Border Patrol, and the Fish and Game Department have been combing over the town of 386 - one of New Hampshire’s most northernmost outposts - and the surrounding area. Massachusetts State Police joined the search yesterday.
They are all looking for Celina Cass, the 11-year-old girl last seen Monday night sitting at the computer in her bedroom.
So far, authorities have not said what they believe happened to her. But they are using every tactic in their arsenal to help find her. Surrounding woods have been searched by officers on foot, on all-terrain vehicles, in helicopters, and with the aid of police canine units.
Officials with New Hampshire Fish and Game lowered water levels on the Connecticut River to help with the hunt. A portable cellphone tower was installed in the town to aid with communication between law enforcement agencies.
And yesterday, FBI agent Kieran Ramsey announced that a $25,000 reward is being offered for information about the girl’s whereabouts, or that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of any person responsible for her disappearance. Another $5,000 is being offered by an anonymous donor.
At a news conference last evening, Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young gave little additional information about the progress of the investigation, saying only that dive teams are being brought in to search bodies of water. She encouraged the public to continue submitting tips to authorities.
“We are looking at those tips, and we are honing the investigation through those tips,’’ she said.
So far, Cass’s family has not spoken publicly about her disappearance. At a candlelight vigil Friday night in the town’s park - a vigil has been held every night since Cass’s disappearance - the family stayed in the center of the crowd, friends, and neighbors forming a circle around them to protect them from the view of news cameras.
The family has hung blankets across the front porch of their home and “NO TRESPASSING’’ signs are posted to warn the TV news vans parked across the street.
West Stewartstown is a village within Stewartstown, which has about 1,000 residents who seem to have a strong sense of identity as being from one or the other.
Locals say they do not understand how this could have happened here, in the small town they proudly believed was safer than cities like Concord or Manchester.

Adam Schefter

Adam Schefter recently tweeted that Dallas has released running back Marion Barber. This should come as no surprise; Barber's battered body has given the Cowboys declining productivity ever since he signed his big second contract in 2007; the acquisition of running back Demarco Murray in the most recent draft essentially sealed the deal.
Nevertheless, Barber gave the Cowboys some outstanding years; from 2005-2007, he was an absolute beast, who kept opposing players and rival defensive coordinators up nights. Although he never rushed for more than 1,000 yards, he more than made up for it with punishing hits, soft hands, pass blocking prowess and ability to close out games.
Marion Barber stood to make $4.250 million as a base salary in 2011 and stood to get an extra $0.5 million roster bonus. His signing bonus was prorated at $2 million per year, so he would have counted a total of $6.750 against the cap in 2011. Earlier reports indicated that the cap savings of releasing Barber after June 1st would amount to to $4 million, but the final amount will become clearer as we better understand the details of the CBA over the coming days.
But Barber is not just a casualty of the salary cap. By the end of 2010, after starting in 10 games but only rushing for 374 yards and four TDs at a very disappointing 3.3 yards per attempt, he had clearly fallen out of favor with Jason Garrett, and when the Cowboys drafted DeMarco Murray it became clear they were ready to move on from Marion Barber.
Unlike the dismissal of Leonard Davis, Barber's release clarifies things at this position. All offseason, the media and Cowboys fans have been speculating about what the Dallas running attack will look like. Now, it seems pretty certain that Felix Jones will be backed up by Murray. The unknown in all of this is: what  role will Tashard Choice have in the offense?

* Manchester United vs Barcelona: Lionel Messi to be Rested

Goals from Nanu and Michael Owen were enough for the English Premier League champions to get a small degree of revenge for their loss earlier this year in the Champions League Final to the Spanish outfit.

United took the lead through Nani in the first half but Barcelona equalized in the 70th minute though Thiago Alcantara, who received a short pass from substitute Carlos Carmona. He scored from about 35 yards out with a smashed shot that flew into the top left corner of David De Gea's net.

However, Barcelona’s joy was short lived and just six minutes later Manchester United regained the lead when sloppy passing by the Barcelona midfield was punished. Former England international regular Owen, who was on for Wayne Rooney, used placement instead of power and pushed the ball past Victor Valdes to start celebrations for the United supporters.

The victory will obviously be little consolation for the loss in the Champions League Final to the Spanish Champions earlier this year, but the English team, like any, will take a certain degree of satisfaction with any kind of win over the recognized best club team in the world at the moment.

The starting line-ups for the match were:

beaauty and the beast

WHEN you have two vehicles called Yeti and Grand Cherokee, you tend to know that you are not dealing with city runabouts. However, while these two vehicles -- from Skoda and Jeep respectively -- are at either end of the SUV concept, they both come laden with extras that make a feather-bedded softie out of Marlboro Man.
The Yeti is an extraordinary able and well-built vehicle that goes under the "crossover" tag to appeal to both the country set and the urban family. In its brochure, it is pictured in 4x4 form perched on a rocky hillside overlooking a lake; while two pages later, it strikes a pose of urban coolness on a city street. I make no secret of the fact that it is one of my favourite cars launched in the past couple of years and it seems my feelings are strongly echoed in Britain. Last week, it was announced that in the Which Car? survey of 52,563 people, Skoda came out top as the 'Most Satisfying Brand to Own'.
The Czech manufacturer, which is controlled by the VW group, scored a top-ranked satisfaction rating of 88.4 per cent, putting it ahead of every other car manufacturer in the survey.
As well as being named the overall most satisfying brand, four Skoda models made it into the survey's top 10 products -- the multi-award winning Yeti (4th); the flagship Superb Estate (6th); and two generations of the Superb Hatch (9th and 10th). All of them achieved approval scores higher than 94 per cent -- an exceptional performance. The top car was the version of the Toyota Yaris Verso built between 2000 and 2005.
Here, Skoda has steadily increased its share of the market, achieving a record 5.6 per cent share in 2010 with a stated goal to become a Top Five bestselling car brand by 2016.
So there was probably an understandable bit of smugness around as I drove the Yeti in its Greenline version until early last week. With the Greenline, Skoda has done everything to save consumption and better CO2 emissions from modifying aerodynamics, lowering the chassis, fitting lower resistance tyres, installing a start-stop system, introducing brake energy and regeneration and saving weight by ditching the spare wheel. It has paid off by now giving between 60 and 70mpg and cutting emissions so that the Yeti falls into the €104 road tax band.
It also means that a Yeti Greenline with its 1.6TDi engine and the very top spec is available for €26,235. True, you will be working the gear lever hard to make fast progress and it is only in 2WD but it is a lovely, safe and very responsible car in a compact but very useful body. It evokes some of the same feelings I had when I first drove the Subaru Forester. While it doesn't have the same AWD ability of the Subaru, it does have the same fetching blend of practicality and style.
I shuddered a bit when I was told that I would be driving the Jeep Grand Cherokee rather than the much smaller Jeep Compass as arranged. For some time I have been keeping the test of the Toyota Landcruiser at bay as really I don't have much use for such beasts in my day-to-day driving.
The Grand Cherokee totally dominated my garage and pushed the household's Hyundai i10 into a far corner between a pile of old takeaway coffee cups and the hedge trimmer. It might be a beast of a machine, but inside it goes out of its way to pamper with every possible aid and comfort. It is also massively powerful, with a three-litre TDi V6 e engine, which will power you to 100km in just over eight seconds. Yet it also comes in at the other end of the emission and consumption chart. Road tax is 10 times that of the Yeti and there's even a massive Overland version with road tax double that again at €2k.
For all its comfort and power, the Grand Cherokee is a bit ungainly when cornering at any reasonable speed. There are settings for taking it across mud, rock and other surfaces at which I'm sure it will do the job very well. If it doesn't, you can always set up home in the vehicle.
There won't be many Grand Cherokees sold. There are more efficient vehicles with better dynamics out there. Yet there is something rather reassuring about its very existence. It plays to our love of the pioneering spirit, and climbing into it is like mounting a horse and leading a wagon train to new frontiers. When I drove it down to Avondale in Co Wicklow, I felt I wanted to power through the forest and across the river rather than politely park in the car park and walk up to Parnell's one-time home.
I don't have €60,000 for it either but at a lot less than half that, the Yeti could be a distinct possibility.

It was a picture-perfect wedding

It was a picture-perfect wedding . An intimate crowd gathered on a beautiful island before to watch two gorgeous people, Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo, tie the knot.
"We see celebrity weddings all the time but this one was a happily ever after … a real love story," Jen Garcia, of People magazine, told "Good Morning America."
Lachey, 37, and Minnillo, 30, were married July 15.
America knows Lachey from his boy band days as the front man for 98 Degrees -- and for his famous first marriage to Jessica Simpson in 2002 that played out in their MTV reality series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica."
The couple divorced in 2006, and moved on, personally and professionally.
Lachey met Minnillo, a former Miss Teen USA and MTV host, while filming a music video for his song "What's Left of Me."
Their relationship has grown.
"I think Nick's learned a lot from his first marriage to Jessica … he and Vanessa dated for five years …," Garcia said.
"When I proposed to Vanessa I took her to the montage in Orange County. We sat by the pool, had drinks, beautiful day ... got down on both knees and laid it on her," he said, adding, "Now you're stuck with me."

With just 2 months until the big day, they brought in celebrity planner Sharon Sacks, the matrimonial mastermind who planned the weddings of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom. With cameras from TLC capturing every move, they started to prepare -- tasting the menu, deciding on décor, and, for Minnillo, trying on the dress.
In the special, to air Saturday on TLC, we get an inside glimpse what really matters to this couple -- especially to Lachey.
He says he pretends to be excited about all the little details -- such as flowers and forks -- but adds: "I'm excited if she's excited ... I'm happy if she's happy."
Minnillo was charmed when Lachey tried on tuxedos.
"Baby, you're sexy," she said.
By far the biggest challenge was securing an intimate location without anyone finding out.
"They decided on a destination wedding with a twist, and told their guests to pack with an island chic wedding and bring their passport," Garcia said.
The surprise destination? Richard Branson's private island in the British Virgin Islands. It was private and perfect, but there were still concerns.
"Helicopters and paparazzi around the island … for us that's nightmare scenario," Lachey said. "We really don't want that to happen."
So they did something guaranteed to stop that.
"We pull fireworks permits -- the FAA will not allow any type of aircraft over the area if there's a permit," Sacks said.
On the big day, after four days of island fun with just 35 family members and friends, all their planning paid off.
Vanessa was stunning in a two-piece Monique Lhuillier ensemble, and she and her new husband danced the night away barefoot, before a grand farewell of fireworks.
"It was really just a small group of people, people that they really love and trust and people that when they look back on it in 20 years they're still going to be friends with those people," Garcia said.
"When you see the smiles on their face, you can't buy that love and happiness," Sacks said. "You just can't buy it!"

Progeria

What is Progeria?

Progeria is a rare genetic condition, where the rating of aging accelerate abnormally. Although its depend on many factors when a child diagnosis with progeria they can be old fast. Let say 10 times faster than normal, 8 years old kid is equal to 80 years old on the kid Body condition.
As an Extreme Aging Disease, there is no cure for this right now. How ever there is a foundation which doing a research for better treatment. Progeria Research Foundation have special mission “to find treatments and the cure for Progeria and its aging related disorders”. Perhaps we can’t cure it for now, but if there a lot of participant on this research i believe someday we will find some bright light.
Some upcoming Fundraiser program for this foundation will be held soon. Sweet Kaylee will do this at Saturday, August 20 at the Maumee Festival. Train rides and a kids game area with all the money going to PRF. Also Kaylee’s Course Race for Progeria at Saturday, October 8 in Monclova.
